Cartoons by Scooter McKenzie

Scooter McKenzie is my cartooning alter-ego, my pen-name, my nom de plume if you're feeling fancy.
I got my big break in 1990 when I became the weekly cartoonist for the Chester Chronicle. The Editor had offered the job to anyone in the design studio, having just sacked the regular cartoonist to cut costs. It wasn't the most auspicious of starts but it did mean that I could get my work published and seen by over 100,000 readers a week.
Since then, if the drawing I'm doing is cartoony or humorous, then it's my scooter shaped logo that goes underneath. You can find a wide selection on www.cartoonstock.com which licenses the work of the world's top cartoonists for use in publications, web, gifts and merchandise.

Where did the name Scooter McKenzie come from?
It was November 1989; my colleague Graham's birthday and we headed for the pub. Drinks flowed and, not for the first time, the conversation took a strange turn.
"Graham, what would you rather be doing if you weren't working here?" "I'd rather have my own television series, an American cop show just like T.J. Hooker." "And what would your character be called?" "Jim Groin." "Sounds good, any parts in it for us?" "Of course, you can be my young assistant Scooter McKenzie. He gets to every crime scene just too late because he's only got a scooter. Also, in the second series he's replaced by a new character; his sister. Also played by you." Other colleagues got roles in Graham's fantasy cop show but none of their character names stuck like mine did. From that day onwards, to certain friends I shall forever be known as Scoot. |
